Now, I don't claim to be the best Fox player. This is largely due to the fact that I am not the best Fox player, by a VERY wide margin. Also, this thread is all my thoughts (and, whatever info people give me, or correct me on.)
That said, Fox is fantastic. He's got good power, good weight (which is good for both recovering, and for some ATs), and a few fun tricks up his sleeve.
Of course, everyone knows everything there is to know, right? Well, I don't. But, I'm going to list off everything I can figure out about Fox, and as much info as I can get, videos, anything.
I'm going to add this right now: A list of people that are helpful, helping, or in some other way I can apply the word help to!
Special Thanks To!
1: Cunning Kitsune. His helpful, comprehensive Fox Guide is so well done, it's somewhat frightening. Regardless, he's given me permission to use any of his guide to go over any missed areas, or areas I'm not as aware about. This will come up with many subcategories. Most likely are: Combos, ATs that I can't do myself, and Timing. I say timing, because he's got some great info on timing for Fox players, and I can't ever hope to top it. So, this little paragraph is my way of saying THANKS! to Cunning Kitsune.
2: The famous Mew2King. M2K was kind enough to hold a discussion with me. Even though it was not the most in depth conversation possible, it was still highly informative. Discussions of combos, Shines, Waveshines, and a few vids (posting them pending permission from M2K) about one of the most competitive matchups: Marth v Fox. Watching them is like watching art, even if the quality isn't the best, and there's no sound. Trust me. Watching them is awe inspiring. Especially because it's Fox (M2K) v Marth (Ken), which is just fantastic.
Hopefully, I'll be able to add more to the list of helpful people! Until then, it's me, a Gamecube, a Gamecube Controller, a TV, and a Comp that won't move. Whoooo!
First, we should examine Fox's abilities.
Ground Attacks
nA(A)(A,A,A,A,A,A...) = Jab, Jab, Kick. Good stuff for very, very quick damage with low knock back. Not the best attack, but, it's decent.
sA = Kick. VERY fast, can be angled for higher, mid, or lower portions of your opponent. Great for people that try to crouch under your kick, or if you're in a combo, and they're falling, and you're just, BAM! Kick. Keep that combo going. It's good for your heart.
2/14/09: Since it's Valentine's Day, and I said this attack is good for your heart, I figured I'd add some info. I find that you CAN combo people that aren't great at Teching with this attack alone. I've gone so high as 0-90% using just this one attack. Walking forward, Kick, Walk, Kick, Walk, Kick, Walk, Kick, they recover off the side, and you turn and repeat. I don't know how useful this is against pros, but, I find it both funny, AND fun.
dA = Tail Sweep. Quick, decent power, can really mess up their charge, and if you're wavedashing, you can easily crouch. Works great!
uA = Juggle Kick. That might not be it's real name, but that's what it is. Once you get good with that attack, you can really, really, really juggle them into decently high percents.
rA (that's run) = Sex Kick. Don't know how people came up with that name. But, it's a great attack. The whole animation is an attack, so, your whole body is an attack. Nice thing to use in a combo, sometimes.
And, that's it for the Tilts! WHOO!
Smash Attacks
L/R Smash = Roundhouse. I love this attack, personally. Quick, moves you a little bit, decent damage... All around good attack.
dSmash = Split. Cover your back, and your front! Good for an edge guard, or to not get hit from behind. Of course, that only works if you hit them before they'd hit you.
uSmash = Flip Kick. Oh, yes, we all know the flip kick. A wonderful attack, with great knock back. A wonderful KO move for Fox. Try to not get predictable with it, or people will figure you out, dodge, and then hurt you a lot. Don't just use it for the kill, though. It's still got good damage.
Yay! Smashes, complete!
Aerials
nA = Aerial Sex Kick. It's like the running attack, but in the air. Good way of attacking. I've seen it used by a lot of great players.
2/14/09: Why is this attack in purple? I had the privilege to talk with M2K himself about combos. The only two he mentioned (and I did specify Melee, for anyone that's worried) was this attack and another.
To quote him: "nair -> something". Words of wisdom, everyone. You'd do well to remember that. And, don't forget to L-Cancel that attack, folks. If you don't, you're just gonna get hit.
fA = Multiple Kicks. Oh, I like this one. Some very quick kicks, dealing a decent amount of damage. Even so, I find that I don't use it that much, which makes me sad.
bA = Back Kick. Yes, a creative name I've given it. It comes out fast, and kicks hard. I happen to really like this move. I feel you can juggle with it fairly well, and KO if they're really high up in damage.
dA = Drill Kick. Great attack to L-Cancel, followed by uSmash. At least, I think so. Good damage, can really hurt your opponent. But, since it's multiple hit, you've really got to connect with all of them for the best outcome.
uA = GAM- er, I mean... Aerial Flip. Yeah, this attack hits in two parts. First part is low damage, next to no knock back. BUT THE SECOND PART IS INSANE. I kill with it all the time. Also, you can use it to juggle your enemy at lower percents. Land with an L-Cancel, and jump up to hit em again.
Alright! That's it for the Aerials.
Specials
nB = Blaster. Pew. Pew pew pew. That's the Blaster, folks. Quick, low damage, ZERO knock back. Your enemy can taunt during it, or charge up a smash. Good for goading close range characters closer, or racking up damage while avoiding them. And, of course, there's the SHDL, or Short Hop Double Laser. Always fun, even if it's better for Falco.
sB = Fox Illusion. Very fast. Very punishable. I've been kicked in the face so many times when I do this, it's not even funny. Still, great for recovering, if you don't miss. Also, can be canceled, for a shorter dash. That screws with people's timing, and allows you to really punish em with a good aerial, or a few shots from your blaster.
uB = Fox Fire. Ohhh, Fox Fire. You're interesting. But, basically, Fox's recovery move. Can deal some damage (FIRE HOT!) but, overall too slow for you to use for anything that's not a recovery.
dB = Reflector. The Shine. One of those sick, sick attacks. Stops your momentum. Running at someone? dB, stop, change tactics. Falling? dB will slow you down, so you don't get chain raped. Wanna kill them when they're at Zero? dB, and if they're off the stage, and you hit em right, that's all you need to do. Oh, yes. The Shine is perhaps one of the most used Fox abilities. Also, Wave Shine is great for doing some damage, and following it up over and over, forcing them off the stage, and leading right into a Shine KO. Mm. Delicious.
And, that's specials!
Grabs
G = Grab. Whee. No damage. It's a grab.
2/14/09: Hopefully, you noticed the other purple attack. As before, this attack is one of the two that M2K recommended for Fox Combos.
The quote? "grab -> something". And, I have to say, I agree. The Grab allows for kneeing your opponent (see below), followed by uThrow (wonderful for juggling), dThrow (if they can't tech), or any of the other throws! (Shine Spike KO, even if it is OP.) So, don't forget, kiddies. Grabbing people with Fox is a good idea. Do it more often than you have been. Clearly, you're not doing it enough.
G, A = Knee. Bam, a few damage to increase your overall ability to beat them up.
fT = Haymaker Punch. Well, I think of it that way. Fox is holding onto em, and BAM, hit em hard, and away from you. Good ability. Not my favorite, but it's fast.
bT = Clay Pigeon. I call it that cause he throws his victim up in the air, and blasts em a few times. Kinda like at a shooting range with clay pigeons. I like this one, cause it looks nice, and tosses them back fairly far. Good for getting them off the edge, if you're in that sort of position. I don't often find a good time to back throw, though, so...
uT = Star Throw. Great for starting a juggle. Or, if your opponent Fast Falls, you can catch em, and throw em up again. Also leads to a beautiful KO with uAir.
dT = Kiss the Pavement. I like it. It can be very interesting. I've even KOed with it, when I was on the ledge, and then I grabbed em, and down throw, and they just FELL. I typically follow it with dB, too. I've been told that it's not so good at higher levels.
And, that's the throws! YAY!
Okay, that covers Fox's attacks.
Videos
Yep! Here are 5 Examples of Fox v Marth.
All vids are submitted to YouTube by M2K, and posted here (currently without permission, though I did ask) by me. So, the next time you see M2K, or talk to him, or whatever, tell him THANKS! Because, these vids are great.
2/14/09 Edits
Spoke with M2K. See things in purple.
Still working on Damage. I have other things to do, too! >.<!
Adding M2K's vids (will be taken down if he says to, but I don't think he minds.)
And,
THANK YOU FOR READING!
